The islands of Tahiti are one of the most expensive tourist destinations in the world. But that shouldn't stop you from a visit. There are some cheaper alternatives to the pricey international hotel chains, like staying in small family pensions or camping which isn't possible on many other Pacific islands.

You can also save money by booking package tours from your home country, but on the other hand it means your mobility is limited.

Most accommodations are big hotels, especially in Moorea and Bora Bora. Many of them offer overwater bungalows, which are an experience in itself but also the most expensive places to stay.

Family pensions and private home stays can be booked through Haere Mai, an association which guarantees a certain standard for rooms and meals. Some have only cold water showers, some have complete bungalows with kitchens. Since there are not many restaurants on smaller islands it is recommended to book your meals with your rooms. These meals are normally plain fare, an interesting mix between french and polynesian cuisine.
