The poisonous cane toad has become the biggest threat to Australia’s wildlife. Originally introduced to control a beetle pest in cane fields, cane toads are now the biggest pest themselves – and out of control. 100 million “toadzillas” populate the coastal areas and threaten to conquer the whole continent. A case study in biocontrol gone wrong.

German biologist Maja Poeschko works as a pest control consultant in the Cook Islands. Her biggest challenge so far: a moth pest that threatens coconut plantations all over the islands. Maja Poeschko managed to control the pest with an introduced biological agent: a wasp that kills the caterpillars of the moth. A case study in successful biocontrol.

A 225 million year old dinosaur species has bee re-introduced on remote islands of New Zealand. A living fossile as study object – Jurassic Park becomes reality. Reptiles of the Sphenodontia species died out 60 million years ago with most other dinosaurs. Only the Tuatara has survived in New Zealand.

New Zealander Pete Bethune attempts to break the world record in circumnavigating the earth in a powerboat. Futuristic design and wave piercing technology allow him to travel at top speeds of 90 km/h through ocean swells. The boat is powered by bio diesel engines.

The Coral Route

South Sea island hopping with a Solent Flying Boat was the most extravagant journey one could do in the 50ies. The TEAL Coral Route connected New Zealand with Fiji, Samoa, the Cook Islands and Tahiti. The last remaining Solent Flying Boat can be seen in an Auckland museum, looked after by veterans of the crew.
