Tonga: Accommodations
Most of Tongatapu’s accommodations are as plain and simple
as the main island itself. Even the so-called International Dateline
Hotel in Nuku‘alofa is not really up to an international standard.
There are also a few reasonably priced places in the city that are
suitable either for business travellers or those who stay a few
days on the main island.
But holidayers and beach lovers would rather go to one of the many
off-shore island resorts which look like something out of a South
Pacific picture book and offer quality accommodation and meals.
To get there and back to the main island is only a half-hour boat
trip from the harbour. You can visit some of them on a day trip
with the island resort’s own ferry boats and check them out
(Fafa Island Resort,
Royal Sunset).
Accommodation in Ha’apai is very simple, with one exception,
while in Vava’u there are some good quality accommodations
on beautiful beaches.
In terms of landscape and activities like diving, whale watching,
kayaking etc.), the northern island groups are far more interesting
than Tongatapu.
