Tonga: Transport

By Air
The international airport Fua’amotu is 20km away from the capital Nuku’alofa. There is a bank counter which isn’t always occupied, so it’s better to change your money at the bank in the city. There are no flights on Sundays.

Air New Zealand flies from Los Angeles to Tonga, you can also fly from New Zealand, Hawaii, Fiji and Samoa with the following airlines:

Air New Zealand
Air Pacific
Polynesian Airlines
Royal Tongan Airlines
Samoa Air (American Samoa to Vava'u)

Bus, Taxi
There is a good public bus network on Tongatapu and Vava’u. But no timetables or busstops – the bus stops where you want it.
Taxis are reasonably priced and although there are no taximeters, you don’t need to worry about being ripped off because the tariffs are set by the government. A lot of taxi drivers speak no English at all and have a limited knowledge of the area.

Rental Cars, Driver’s License
Rental cars are only available on Tongatapu and Vava’u.
Drive on the left side of the road. Although people in Tonga don’t drive fast, they often drive carelessly and without thinking. There is little traffic outside Nuku’alofa. The island is flat with short distances, so it’s easy to get around on a bicycle or scooter.

Avis Rentals

The ferry connections from Nuku’alofa to the outer islands are heavily used and the ships are not very comfortable. You share the small room onboard with many locals and a heap of luggage. The official timetable is available from the Visitor Bureau.
