Tonga: Activities & Tours
Tonga is a sleepy Kingdom and doesn’t burst with tourist
activities. It’s the ideal country for switching off and relaxing
without feeling as though you’ve missed something important.
You can tick off the sights on the main island of Tongatapu after
two or three excursions. It’s a good idea to spend the rest
of your stay on one of the offshore islands or on Ha’apai
or Vava’u in the north.
Beaches
The only beaches worth mentioning on Tongatapu are: Oholei beach
in the east, the small bays of Keleti Beach in the south and Ha’atafu
beach in the west, which is also popular for surfers. The nicer
beaches are on the offshore islands Fafa, Atata and Pangaimotu.
The Tongan Beach Resort in Vava’u and the Sandy Beach Resort
in Ha’apai both have beautiful beaches right on their doorstep
and a lot of the islands in Vava’u have picture postcard beaches.
Yachties will find paradise in the northern group
of Vava’u. The area is easy to navigate and there are countless
anchorages in picturesque bays and secluded beaches. International
yacht charter companies have their bases in Neiafu.
Diving fans can go island hopping, because there
are professional dive companies on both Ha’apai and Vava’u.
There are organised kayak tours in both island groups.
