Tahiti: Activities & Tours
The Tahitian islands have a lot to offer for the more active tourist.
There are inland excursions on horseback or with 4WD, trekking and
walking tours in the mountains of the high islands or lagoon tours
with reef excursions, snorkel and picnic trips to the small islands
(motus) in the lagoon.
The Society Islands are not famous for their beaches
but for the dramatic green mountains and colourful lagoons.
The best and most picturesque beaches are on the atolls of the Tuamotus
with palm fringed white sandy beaches and turquoise cristal clear
lagoons with a phantastic underwater world.
Diving is possible on all islands with tourism
infrastructure. The best diving spots are in the waters of Raiatea
in the Society Islands and Manihi, Tikehau and Rangiroa in the Tuamotus.
Rangiroa and Tikehau are famous for big fishes and sharks and Manta
Rays in the passages between the motus.
The waters of the Society Islands are ideal for sailing.
The main hub is Raiatea with international yacht charter companies
like The Moorings. From there Bora Bora, Huahine, Moorea and atolls
like Maupiti and Tupau are in easy reach. Yachts in all shapes and
sizes are available for charter or hire with or without crew and
skipper.
Best time for sailing is between April and June with light winds
up to 10-15 knots and temperatures around 30 degrees Celsius. The
months from July to August could be more windy and rainy with the
Maarumu, a southeasterly with up to 25-25 knots and gales to 45
knots. From September to October it‘s mild and dry with easterlies
up to 10-15 knots. Rainy season is from November to March with winds
from north and northwest and possibly cyclones
