Samoa: Activities and Tours
For Samoans, their leisurely life style is more important than
hectic tourist activities, so don’t expect too much in terms
of organised water and leisure activities. The islands, with their
picturesque villages and landscapes are great for inland excursions
and photo safaris. You can either do these by rental car or bus,
or on an organised tour.
Beaches
The best beaches on Upolu are on the southern and eastern coast
of the island. The only way to get there from the hotels in Apia
is by car or bus. Hotels and local travel agents offer organised
day tours too. If you’re driving yourself, you can get to
the south coast beaches via Cross Island Road in less than an hour.
The beaches at Salamumu and Matautu in
the Lefaga district are stunning, and the latter served as the backdrop
for the 1951 Hollywood film ‘Return to Paradise’, hence
its name Paradise Beach. However, the most beautiful
beaches are in the eastern district of Aleipata,
which is also where most of the beach fales (samoan for beach hut)
are. On Savai’i, the best white sand beaches are on the west
cape near Falealupo and Papa, but Tanu
Beach at Manase in the north is also worth visiting.
Tip
If you want to get around Samoa on your own steam, you’ll
inevitably be confronted with the demand for tolls on particular
roads or beaches. Even locals from other island regions have to
pay these fees, which is why you should always have some small change
when travelling around the country. It’s the Samoan way of
rural people getting some money out of tourism. However, if money
is demanded for photographing people and houses, don’t pay.
It’s better to just do without the photo.
