Fiji: Activities and Tours
Fiji boasts a wide range of activities, both ashore and in the
ocean. Viti Levu’s West Coast serves as the main focus for
beach-oriented holidays. There are daily excursions to the offshore
islands of the Mamanucas and Yasawas, as well as tours to the hinterland
or along the Coral Coast to Suva. If you’re keen to see more
of the country, rent a car and explore the island. Do note however
that the inland roads are unsealed and in bad shape, particularly
in the rainy season. It is definitely worth renting a 4WD. Viti
Levu’s main road runs around the island and was built during
colonisation. It’s called Queens Road on the south coast and
Kings Road on the north coast. Queens Road is fully sealed, as is
Kings Road, except for a 57km stretch between Korovou on the east
coast and the north coast. It‘s an easy drive, even with a
standard car.
Mini Cruises
For a short stopover in Fiji it is worth doing one of the mini cruises
through the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands, which last between two
and six nights. Even those who aren’t avid cruisers will enjoy
travelling around some of the most picturesque Fijian islands. The
Blue Lagoon Cruise for instance has become something of a legend
since it brought tourists to the otherwise inaccessible Yasawa Islands
40 years ago.
Diving
For those who have until now done little diving or snorkelling,
a holiday in the South Pacific is the best opportunity to get started.
Fiji’s waters belong to the five best dive destinations in
the world. The water is crystal clear and warm, the diversity of
the underwater world impressive and there is barely a hotel or a
resort without a dive operation attached. Beginners courses with
an internationally recognised certificate (mostly PADI) are offered
everywhere. By now, over 50 dive companies offer their services,
however only those with the FDOA symbol of the Fiji Dive Operators
Association are obliged to conform with international safety standards.
The most important reef formations are:
- Great Sea Barrier Reef, which screens off Viti Levu in the
north
- The reefs around the islands of Kadavu (Astroblabe Reef)
- The Viti Levu Fringing Reef along the Coral Coast (Beqa Lagoon)
- The reefs in the Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu
- The Lau group reefs
All of the above mentioned dive spots have their own, often spectacular
sights: labyrinths of underwater caves, large areas of coral plateaus
(near Suva), rocky points jutting out from the deep (The Pinnacles
on Beqa Reef) as well as unique coral formations such as the Great
White Wall at Taveuni. The most popular place for shark
feeding is in the Mamanucas.

The reef dotted waters of Fiji demand a high level of attention

and Suva’s Sailing Club are the best locations for chartering
a private yacht.

Adventure
Trekking and hiking in Viti Levu’s mountainous interior is
becoming more and more popular. But it’s not a good idea to
take hiking in Fiji into your own hands, simply because neither
villages nor streets are very well sign-posted. Some tour operators
offer both one day and multiple day trips with overnight stays in
villages. Part of the experience is a Fijian Kava ceremony (sevusevu)
and a celebration with song (meke), dance and traditional
food from the earth oven (lovo). There are also countless
Jeep Safaris in the mountains, white water trips, bus tours and
river tours on the Navua River and Sigatoka River on a bamboo raft
(bilibili) or inflatable raft.
