Cook Islands: Transport
By Air
The international airport is on Rarotonga, 2km from the capital
town of Avarua. Air
New Zealand and Aloha
Airlines are the only international airlines flying to the Cook
Islands. It takes about nine hours to fly there from Los Angeles,
from Tahiti it’s one hour, from Fiji three hours and from
New Zealand 3,5 hours.
The local airline Air
Rarotonga flies from Rarotonga small, modern aircrafts several
times a day to the outer islands.
Bus, Taxi
On the main island of Rarotonga, the Island
Bus circles the island every half-hour. There is no public transport
on the other islands, although buses do go to and from the airport
and hotel for departures and arrivals. There are only taxis on Rarotonga
and Aitutaki.
Rental Cars, Driver’s License
Rental cars are only available on Rarotonga and Aitutaki. On all
of the other islands you can rent bicycles or scooters from respective
places of accommodation.
To drive a vehicle (including scooters), you need to have a Cook
Islands Driver’s License which you can get for NZ$10 at the
Rarotonga Police Station in Avarua after showing your international
licence. Drive on the left side of the road. The speed limit is
40km/h in villages and towns and 50km/h outside.
