Cook Islands: Transport

By Air
The international airport is on Rarotonga, 2km from the capital town of Avarua. Air New Zealand and Aloha Airlines are the only international airlines flying to the Cook Islands. It takes about nine hours to fly there from Los Angeles, from Tahiti it’s one hour, from Fiji three hours and from New Zealand 3,5 hours.
The local airline Air Rarotonga flies from Rarotonga small, modern aircrafts several times a day to the outer islands.

Bus, Taxi
On the main island of Rarotonga, the Island Bus circles the island every half-hour. There is no public transport on the other islands, although buses do go to and from the airport and hotel for departures and arrivals. There are only taxis on Rarotonga and Aitutaki.

Rental Cars, Driver’s License
Rental cars are only available on Rarotonga and Aitutaki. On all of the other islands you can rent bicycles or scooters from respective places of accommodation.
To drive a vehicle (including scooters), you need to have a Cook Islands Driver’s License which you can get for NZ$10 at the Rarotonga Police Station in Avarua after showing your international licence. Drive on the left side of the road. The speed limit is 40km/h in villages and towns and 50km/h outside.
