The islands of the South Pacific, romantically called "South Seas" or "Oceania", are scattered over the Pacific Ocean between the continents of Asia and America. The inhabitants of approximately 25,000 islands belong to three major cultur groups: Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia.

Polynesia extends over the islands of Hawaii, New Zealand, Samoa, American Samoa, Tonga, the Cook Islands, Niue, French Polynesia (Tahiti), Tokelau, Wallis & Futuna, Tuvalu, Pitcairn and Easter Island. Melanesia in the Eastern Pacific consists of Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea. Micronesia in the Northwestern Pacific encompasses the Marschall Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia, Palau, Guam, the Northern Marianas, Kiribati and Nauru.
